MARION — The Marion City Council is expected to approve Police Chief David Fitts’ recommendation to hire four school safety officers to serve the remainder of this school year per the intergovernmental agreement with the Marion Unit 2 School District when it meets Monday night at 6:30 at City Hall.

According to the meeting agenda, they are Angelo Hightower, Doug Brinkley, James “Tony” Reynolds and Ben Wilson. Each school safety officer will be paid $20 per hour with no benefits to be reimbursed by the school district.

The council is also expected to approve the police chief’s recommendation to hire two part-time animal control officers as presented at $11 an hour. Names are not available due to the agenda being finalized before the hiring process was finalized according to the Marion City Clerk’s office.

The council is also set to discuss Mayor Mike Absher’s 2020 Vision and approve two ordinances raising the retail and service occupation tax rate by three-quarters of a percent beginning Jan. 1, discuss and approve an ordinance establishing the video gaming code for the city that will repeal another ordinance and discuss/adopt a resolution committing to the abatement of future property tax levies in 2020 and beyond.
