JEFFERSON COUNTY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that the body found last week near oil pumps south of Ina has been identified as a 27-year-old male tourist from the Republic of Lithuania.

Benas Bacanskas was reportedly passing through the area while traveling from Nashville, Tennessee to Chicago.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office cannot release a formal cause of death until final laboratory and autopsy reports are made available but will provide an update as soon as the formal cause of death is released.

Around 9:45 a.m. on August 25th, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a possible body found by an oil well South of Ina.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies and detectives traveled to the scene where the body of a deceased person was located.

The Jefferson County Coroner and Illinois State Police CSI were then called to the location to assist in the investigation.

The investigation is ongoing but at this time no foul play is suspected.
