CENTRALIA — An autopsy conducted Thursday on the remains of a deceased person discovered earlier in the week in an abandoned residence in Centralia is complete. According to Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon, evidence and indicators from the autopsy are still being analyzed and the investigation will now focus on those findings.

Cannon says he expects to release more information regarding those findings at some point Friday. He previously reported that the autopsy was scheduled to help determine the gender and identity of the body, as well as the cause of death.

Police reportedly were alerted around 4:22 p.m. Tuesday by people riding bikes in the area to a smell coming from an abandoned property in the 1000 block of Cormick Street in Centralia.

Centralia Police Chief Brian Atchison says officers responding to the report located an unidentified deceased subject inside the residence. Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators were called to process the scene and continue to assist CPD and the coroner’s office with the investigation.
