VERMUNDY, IL — A 63-year-old Vernon man was killed Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Vermundy Road in northern Marion County.

Illinois State Police say Mitchell Norris was traveling eastbound on Vermundy Road approximately a quarter-mile west of Garrett Road when he drove off the roadway and overturned.

According to Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon, Norris’ car was discovered in a soybean field by nearby residents just after 7a.m. Saturday morning and sheriff’s deputies found Norris’ body in the vehicle. Cannon pronounced him dead on the scene and says it’s believed the crash happened sometime around midnight.

Cannon says the vehicle apparently rolled at least twice after failing to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Norris was not wearing his seat belt.

Day/Macz Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
