WASHINGTON COUNTY — A 31-year-old Gainesville, Florida man is in the Washington County Jail following his arrest for alleged trafficking of cannabis.

Marcus KD Hayes was arrested Monday and charged in Washington County court with trafficking more than 5,000 grams of cannabis and manufacture with the intent to deliver more than 5,000 grams of cannabis — both of which are Class X felonies — and possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, which is a Class 1 felony.

According to Nashville Police Lt. Brock Styninger, he encountered Hayes Saturday night around 10:30 p.m. at the truck stop on the north side of Nashville and based upon conversation with Hayes and Hayes’ behavior it was believed that there was more than just an amount of cannabis in the car for personal use.

Hayes reportedly attempted to flee from the scene before officers searched his rental vehicle but with the assistance of the police K-9, he was apprehended after a short pursuit.

Styninger says that after a search of the rental vehicle, approximately 11 pounds of cannabis was discovered in separate vacuum sealed packages of about one pound each.

Hayes was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Washington County Jail where he remained Monday afternoon, with bail set at $100,000. He’s next scheduled to appear in court August 27 for a status hearing with his court appointed attorney.
