According to Atchison, around 8:20 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Kerr and Lincoln after receiving a report of a male subject that had been battered.

Witnesses who provided aid to the young man said he was non-responsive and seizing in the street, his face bloody and swollen. A crowd of 15 to 20 people had gathered and eventually moved to the hospital ER where they were denied entry and the facility placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Atchison says officers arrived on scene and located the subject as reported. Centralia Fire and EMS responded to the scene and gave aid to the subject who was transported to the hospital and due to the severity of his injuries was airlifted to a St Louis area hospital. His condition is unknown.

CPD called for backup from Wamac, Central City, Clinton County, Marion County, and Illinois State Police. They also called for all available midnight shift officers to be brought in.

Atchison says Centralia Police continue to investigate the incident. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Centralia Police at 618-533-7602.
