MT. VERNON — The Jefferson County Treasurer will be mailing real estate property tax bills on August 6, 2019. Due dates are September 5 for the first installment, and November 5 for the second installment. This is about two weeks earlier than last year thanks to the efforts of the county assessors, and the staff in the county clerk’s office, and is the result of an ongoing effort by the County to return tax billing to the proper cycle.
Over the course of the next three years the County hopes to return to May billing which would lead eventually to June and August payment due dates by the year 2022. This will place Jefferson County in compliance with the State statute for the first time in decades.
Also this year the Jefferson County Treasurer will offer paperless billing for the first time to those interested in that option. Information regarding the paperless option will be presented with the tax bills, and is available to anyone with a valid email account. Those who opt to sign up this year can expect to receive a paperless tax bill beginning in 2020. Look for the Registration Code which will be printed on the tax bill immediately above the payment stubs. We are hopeful that many will take advantage of this option which promises to be safe, secure and fast, and will generate some cost savings for the County.
The prepayment option is still available but has been modified. Taxpayers are welcome to pre-pay their taxes up to $100 “less than” their prior year tax bill. The dates that prepayments for taxes due in 2020 will be accepted begins on December 2, 2019 and extends tentatively through May 29, 2020 – the final date for acceptance of prepayments will change as the tax billing cycle changes.
