JEFFERSON COUNTY — A 33-year-old Mt. Vernon man has been found unfit to stand trial in Jefferson County court on charges of sexual assault of a child.
Charles W. Broadway was found unfit to stand trial due to mental issues and intellectual disability. An evaluation of his mental and intellectual fitness was ordered earlier this year.
Broadway was arrested in August of 2018 and charged with two counts Class X felony predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13 and Class 2 aggravated criminal sexual abuse causing bodily harm.
His arrest came after Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an address on North Seven Mile Creek Lane in reference to a call about a sexual assault. Upon arrival deputies made contact with all involved and called for detectives.
Detectives arrived on scene and after an investigation Broadway was taken into custody and was taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he has been held since with bail set at $150,000.
He was remanded Tuesday to the custody of the Department of Human Services where he is to receive care to achieve fitness for trial.
Authorities in court Tuesday said they expect he could achieve mental fitness within one year. A status hearing on the case is scheduled for September 10.
