CENTRALIA — A 45-year-old Centralia man remains in the Marion County Jail following an armed standoff with police early Saturday morning.

According to Centralia Police Chief Brian Atchison, John Koch was taken into custody on multiple charges Saturday after allegedly threatening police and not coming out of his home in the 900 block of East Calumet for over 4 hours.

Atchison says officers were initially dispatched to the home around 11:54 Friday night on a report of a woman screaming ‘Get off of me’. Upon arrival, officers made contact with a female who suffered facial and hand injuries during an apparent domestic dispute.

Reports indicate Koch then displayed an ax from a downstairs window and told the police to get off of his property. Minutes later he retreated to an upstairs room and from an upstairs window threatened to shoot any officer that tried to enter the house.

Officers set up a perimeter around the house and began trying to make contact with the suspect to surrender and exit the house.  Additional off-duty officers were called in, including members of the Centralia Police Department High-Risk Team (HRT).

It was ultimately determined the suspect’s parents were also inside the house and when efforts to make contact by phone or public address system were unsuccessful, specialized teams were called to the scene. They were eventually able to enter the home and secure both parents.

During an initial search of the residence, Koch was not located but was found moments later hiding in the attic covered in insulation.

He was taken into custody and transported to the Marion County Jail on charges of domestic battery, resisting/obstructing a peace officer and aggravated assault of a police officer.

Centralia City firefighters were called to clear the home of tear gas that had been fired during the standoff.
