MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon City Council chose to lease city fleet vehicles from Enterprise Fleet Services over Ford Square at Monday night’s city council meeting.

The city is looking replace many vehicles in their aging fleet. City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel told the council this deal would cover about $1 million of the over $6 million the city needs to get its vehicle fleet to top shape.

Both Enterprise and Ford Square’s lease proposals were very similar, and Mayor John Lewis said at the meeting it really came down to when the city would foot the bill.

In other council business, the city approved a lease with GFI Digital, Inc. in Mt. Vernon to lease five copiers for five years for just over $40,000. Bechtel also announced at the meeting that the city has been awarded a grant to replace many street lights on Mt. Vernon’s south side with new, brighter, LED bulbs. She anticipates those to be installed by August.
