MT. VERNON — A 56-year-old Mt. Vernon man charged in multiple cases with possessing child pornography has died after having a medical issue in jail.
According to court records, Reagan Russell faced four Class X felony charges in two separate cases of reproduction of child pornography, two Class 1 felony charges of possessing child pornography, and one Class 2 felony charge of possessing child pornography of a child under the age of 13. The first case was filed in 2018 and the second was filed in April.
Authorities say Russell had a “medical crisis” in April and was sent to a St. Louis hospital, where he later died.
Russell’s death certificate said the manner of death was natural.
Russell was scheduled for a June 11 jury trial on the first set of charges. But records show he rejected an offer from the state so he was subsequently charged in April with the second set of charges.
Russell had remained in jail since his initial arrest, his bail increased to $200,000 with the filing of the second case.
