The City of Centralia has declared June 8 Gun Violence Awareness Day in the City, after Centralia resident Kittie McMillan presented a resolution to the council Tuesday.
As part of the day, McMillan is organizing a “Wear Orange” event at the Library Park Bandshell.
Everyone is invited to attend the event starting at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 8.
Those who have been affected by gun violence are asked to speak about their experience. McMillan is the mother of Tim Beatty, who grew up in Centralia but was shot and killed while living in Carbondale.
Tim lived in a neighborhood where shots were fired during a nearby house party. He was struck by a stray bullet while in his home and ushering others to safety.
McMillan will be giving out cans of orange Crush soda during the June 8 event, to encourage people to “crush” gun violence.
