SALINE COUNTY — One person was injured in a chain reaction crash involving four vehicles around 3:45 Tuesdayafternoon on Illinois 34 at Mount Moriah Road in Saline County.

According to Illinois State Police, a 2017 Freightliner garbage hauler, driven by Rodney E. Spivey of Elizabethtown, was going north on Illinois 34 and a 2009 Honda Accord, driven by Kyle G. Schwarz of Harrisburg, and a 2006 International, driven by David L. Mitchell of Raleigh, were stopped going north behind a 1999 Freightliner truck tractor, driven by Clint E. Breiner of Damiansville. Breiner was stopped to turn onto Mount Moriah Road. Spivey stated his brakes failed and was not able to stop.

Spivey’s vehicle then struck Mitchell’s vehicle in the rear. This set off a chain reaction causing Mitchell’s vehicle to strike the rear of Schwarz’s car. Schwarz’s car then struck the rear of Breiner’s vehicle.

Mitchell was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries. Illinois 34 was closed for three hours.

Spivey was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

ISP was assisted at the crash scene by Saline County EMS, the Saline County Sheriff’s Department, IDOT, Ricks Towing (Mt. Vernon & Fairfield) and Jones Towing (Eldorado).
