CENTRALIA — Monday night’s agenda for the Centralia City Council includes an item for discussion on the residency qualifications of Mayor-Elect Bryan Kuder.

Kuder has reportedly admitted to owning a home outside the Centralia city limits but has indicated he will live in an apartment in Centralia to satisfy the residency requirement.

Kuder’s residency wasn’t an issue during the filing period because at the time he owned a home in the city limits that he has since been sold.

According to Vernell Burris, who was also a candidate for Mayor, he requested State Board of Election and Illinois Attorney General Officials to remove Kuder as a candidate prior to the election, but after the ballot was certified he was told it was not the right to time to challenge a candidate’s standing.

City Manager Dan Ramey, who has recently announced his own resignation, says the city council can vote to block Kuder from being seated after the discussion or take no action if they feel he is qualified. The council’s decision could be appealed to the Marion County circuit court.

Kuder is scheduled to be seated as the city’s new mayor at the May 13th meeting.
