MARION COUNTY — Centralia voters selected a new mayor Tuesday, with Brian Kuder bringing in nearly 50% of the vote in a four-way race.

Howard Jones lost his bid for the mayor’s seat with only 38-percent, followed by Vernell Burris with 9-percent and Thomas Henegar with 6-percent.

Robert “Spanky” Smith will take a seat on the Centralia City Council after he brought in almost 50-percent of the vote.

He’ll be joined at the table by incumbent council member David Sauer who maintained 45-percent of the vote.

Incumbent council member William “Bill” Smith lost his reelection bid after he brought in only 38-percent, followed by Nicholas “Nick” Heath with 27-percent and write-in candidate William Harrell with 18-percent.

The Village of Central City elected three members of the Board of Trustees. Gary Hall received 55-percent, Charles Mattmiller received 52-percent and Ken Buchanan received 51-percent of the vote.

Karlie Patten and Derrick Starr failed in their bids for trustee, bringing in only 32-percent and 31-percent respectively.

In Salem, Mayor Rex Barbee was unopposed in his reelection bid. Jim Koehler easily secured a seat on the Salem City Council with 70-percent of the vote, and incumbent council members Nicolas Farley and Craig Morton handily maintained their council seats with both men carrying 70-percent of the votes.

And by a 60-percent majority, Fayette County voters have approved a 1-percent sales tax to be imposed and used exclusively for school facilities.
