CARBONDALE — A Carbondale man died after being hit by a vehicle in Jackson County Saturday night.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after 9, a report came in about a traffic crash on Dogwood Road, about a mile east of Giant City Road, in rural Carbondale. The caller reported he had struck a pedestrian walking in the roadway. Deputies and other emergency responders were sent to the scene.

A preliminary investigation showed a pickup truck was traveling east on Dogwood Road when it struck a pedestrian walking his dog. The driver, identified as 57-year-old Jackie Roland of Carbondale, called 911 and rendered aid until first responders arrived. The pedestrian, identified as 25-year-old William Deutsch of Carbondale, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office continues to investigate.

The Jackson County Ambulance Service, Carbondale Police Department, Carbondale Fire Department and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office all assisted on the call.
