MT. VERNON — The comment period for the possibility of the Mt. Vernon Post Office moving is now open and will be open until May 1st. But USPS representatives didn’t release the proposed location to the public as widely anticipated Monday night.

Even when pressed by the city council and the public at a hearing before Monday night’s city council meeting, Vee Spikes with the USPS could not release the location to the public citing federal regulations and ongoing negotiations.

The city has also been unable to release the information to the public officially during this time, and Mt. Vernon Mayor John Lewis says while residents are eager to find out the post office’s new location, there’s also a bigger picture to the entire post office relocation process.

Lewis says that Spikes has been very helpful in the whole process, and that red tape is the biggest issue in the process. Spikes told those in attendance that the location could be finalized and announced to the public in six to eight weeks.
