MVPD believes second round of shots related to earlier shooting of Chicago man

MOUNT VERNON — A second round of gunfire was reported Monday night in the 500 block of South 17th Street in Mt. Vernon where a 21-year-old Chicago man had been shot earlier in the day.

According to Mt. Vernon police, they were able to recover shell casings from the gunfire. No injuries were reported and no damage to vehicles or buildings was discovered.  The gunfire was reported at 9:35 Monday night.

Police do believe the gunshots were related to the Monday afternoon shooting that sent Robert Grady to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Grady was last reported to be in stable condition.

He reportedly walked up to a home in the 500 block of South 17th Street around 2 p.m. Monday and told residents he’d been shot in the back and needed medical help.

Grady was reportedly an associate with Carlos Johnson who was shot to death in a Mt. Vernon alley in 2017. Roderick Oats Jr. was sentenced in November 2018 to 65 years in prison for Johnson’s murder.

Mt. Vernon police were assisted at the scene Monday by Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies, Litton’s Ambulance and Mt. Vernon Fire Department in handling Grady’s shooting.

Detectives from the Mt Vernon Police Department have taken over the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Mt Vernon Police Department at 242-2131 or Jefferson County Crimestoppers at 242-8477.   Page says at this point they have found potential witnesses in the area uncooperative.
