MARION COUNTY — A 30-year-old Sandoval man was arrested Monday by Centralia police after a series of incidents that ended with the man’s car in a ditch.

Matthew Claxton reportedly went to a home in the 1200 block of Case Street in Centralia with the intent of confronting another man about allegedly stealing his fiancé’s gun.

While the two men were talking, the resident of the Case Street home believed he recognized items in the back of Claxton’s vehicle as being from his shed. The resident reportedly checked and confirmed  a generator, chainsaw, and other items were missing from his shed and that the items in Claxton’s vehicle were allegedly his.

The resident reportedly removed the items from Claxton’s vehicle and then struck him with a baseball bat. As Claxton fled, he reportedly ran his car into the ditch.

When police arrived, Claxton was allegedly beating on his car with his hands while the victims of the alleged burglary were waiting for police to arrive on their front porch.

Claxton declined medical treatment and was taken to the Marion County Jail. He was initially charged in Marion County Court Tuesday with Class 2 felony burglary. However, it was later determined that the burglary actually occurred across the county line in Clinton County and the charge was dismissed.

Claxton and the case file are now expected to be transferred to Clinton County to await further action.
