CARBONDALE — A snag has developed concerning Carbondale’s new dog park.

Plans for the park were set to be approved Monday night by the Carbondale Park District Board of Commissioners, but an insurance problem has put the project on hold for the moment.

The board says since the park will be in Parrish Park, the nonprofit group behind the park – The Friends of Carbondale Dog Parks – will need to get liability insurance. That’s according to the Southern Illinoisan.

The group told the board that it is opposed to carrying the insurance because it would be liable for incidents in the park area. Officials say they are willing to have an actual policy on the dog park but nowhere else and make it safe. They also said if the park district forces the group to have insurance, they will likely move to another spot.

Lawyers are currently working on an agreement to get this issue resolved.
