BENTON — The Benton Water Department says all water service has been restored west of North and South Main streets from Webster to McFall in Benton after a major water line break happened Wednesday evening.

Officials say there was a break in a 10″ water main. Residents were told to conserve water. A boil water order was issued for customers stretching from the Benton Square west to Du Quoin Street from West Church Street to McFall Street.

A boil water order is still in effect until further notice.

Meanwhile, a major gas leak also happened Wednesday evening near the Benton Fire Department at Maple and Washington streets.

The Benton Fire Department along with the Benton Street Department, Ameren and Franklin County Emergency Management personnel all arrived at the scene.

The fire department had to evacuate some homes and businesses within the immediate vicinity of the leak. Gas was detected in the sanitary sewer system. FCEMA had a relocation site on standby in case a major evacuation had to be done.
