HAMILTON COUNTY — An August jury trial date was confirmed Thursday for a 24-year-old man charged in Hamilton County with the murder of 45-year-old James Berkel of Salem

Zachary J. Shock will have a final pre-trial hearing August 16 and then jury trial on August 27. He’s facing two counts first degree murder stemming from Berkel’s 2016 shooting death in the home of Shock’s mother in McLeansboro.

Shock was being held in the White County Jail on the charges when in June 2018 he and two others escaped.

Shock remained on the run for weeks before being apprehended. He waived his right Thursday to a preliminary hearing on an escape charge in White County, but the case is not scheduled again until after the scheduled murder trial.
