Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones is warning residents about a phone scam.

Jones says a county resident got a phone call Thursday morning from a man identifying himself as a member of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

The man told the resident that she had an arrest warrant in Franklin County for Contempt of Court. The man instructed the woman to drive to Casey’s General Store, Dollar General or CVS and to remain on the phone with him.

Once at these locations, the woman was instructed to buy four $500 money pack cards. Once the cards were bought, the woman gave the man the pin numbers. The woman was then instructed to drive to the Franklin County Jail to turn herself in for processing.

Jones warns residents to be aware of any urgent solicitations for funds, especially if it is needed for unexpected bills such as bail money, utility bills, IRS bills or doctor bills. Scam artists use wire transfer as their method of choice for payment. Any urgent request to wire money should be treated suspiciously.

The sheriff’s office will never contact you by phone and make a request for bond money or other fees. Should you receive a call making these requests, please contact the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office or your local police department.
