Two 18-year-old men have been charged in Marion County court with burglary allegedly stemming from a recent string of vehicle burglaries in Salem.

According to court records, 18-year-old Jacob Elston, of Kinmundy, has been charged with one Class 3 felony count of burglary, while 18-year-old Matthew Whiting, of Salem has been charged with two Class 3 felony counts of burglary and one Class 2 felony count of possessing a stolen firearm.

Salem police say residents reported seeing Whiting and Elston walking around Salem and looking into vehicles.

On Sunday officers found Whiting in possession of drug paraphernalia and took him into custody.

They then reported finding several items in a backpack Whiting was carrying, including a handgun and wallet containing some identification of another person.

Whiting and Elston were taken to the Marion County Jail. A female juvenile with them at the time was charged with curfew violation.
