Jerod M. Buchanan has been formally charged with Class 1 felony residential burglary, Class 2 felony kidnapping and misdemeanor violating an order of protection.

According to Assistant Police Chief Trent Page, officers responded around 5:47 a.m. Friday to the 1700 block of Oakland in response to a call from a person saying they witnessed a man climb through a window of a neighbor’s house and then a few minutes later leave out the same window with a small child.

Officers made contact with Buchanan near Salem Road and Oakland. He initially gave officers the wrong name, but when they discovered his real name they also discovered an order of protection against him that prohibited him from having contact with the Oakland home or a list of individuals at the home, including the small child taken through the window. The child was taken into protective custody and transported back to the mother.

According to Page, Buchanan was also arrested on burglary charge for allegedly entering a vehicle belonging to another resident of the Oakland residence prior to entering the home. Items reportedly taken from the vehicle were found on Buchanan at the time of his arrest.

He’s scheduled for a June 20, first appearance with his court appointed attorney.
