Police in Carbondale say it was a SIU student from Chicago who was struck by a northbound freight train around 4:30 Sunday morning.

Twenty-year-old Aaron Banez was walking in the area of the train tracks at the East Pleasant Hill Road overpass when he was hit and died as a result of injuries he received.

Carbondale Police was assisted in their investigation by SIU Police and the Canadian National Railroad.
