Communities in southern Illinois, including Jefferson County, are discussing following Effingham County’s lead in adopting a resolution declaring it a sanctuary for gun owners.
The Effingham County Board on Monday passed the resolution on an 8-1 vote and directed employees not to enforce new Illinois laws that would “unconstitutionally restrict the Second Amendment.”
Jefferson County Board Chairman Steve Draege said one of their board members has obtained a copy of Effingham’s resolution and they believe it supports their rights.
They intend to discuss the resolution at a committee meeting Thursday. If the committee approves it, it will head to the full board meeting next Monday.
Effingham County State’s Attorney Bryan Kibler told the Effingham Daily Newsthe action is largely symbolic.
He says the resolution won’t control decision making at the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Dave Mahon said if the state were to pass such a law he would consult with the state’s attorney and the Illinois Sheriff’s Association before deciding what to do.
The resolution also opposes state legislation that Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed that would have required more registration for gun shops.
