A Grand Tower man died Tuesday afternoon after he attempted to clear a clogged drain by mixing a commercial drain cleaner with bleach, which created a poisonous gas in the home.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to the home in Grand Tower around 1:15 p.m. after getting a report about the man not breathing due to the poisonous gas the chemicals created. He was not able to get out and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman in the home called 911 and was able to get out of the home due to the dispatcher’s fast thinking telling the woman to get out when the dispatcher determined a deadly exposure had occurred.
The woman was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, and then flown to a St. Louis area hospital.
