The potential exists for accumulating wintry precipitation across our region late this week.

The National Weather Service in Paducah says initailly temperatures will be warm enough to support all liquid precipitation through Thursday evening. As sub-freezing air sweeps in behind the cold front, a transition to a wintry mix and eventually snow is likely from west to east late Thursday night into Friday.

Models are still not in the best agreement as to how all of this will unfold, with substantial differences in the track of the surface low and how quickly precipitation transitions from liquid to frozen. However, there has been and continues to be a relatively strong signal for accumulating wintry precipitation from late Thursday night into Friday night. The storm system will be followed by another Arctic air mass this weekend.

Stay tuned to later forecasts as the weather service narrows down the time frame for accumulating precipitation, further refine precipitation types and adjust forecast amounts as better model agreement hopefully leads to improved forecast confidence.
