Animal control in Benton was discussed during Monday night’s Benton City Council meeting.

The council addressed this issue a couple of weeks ago as the city was getting reports of dogs running loose and not on leashes. Franklin County, which only has two animal control officers for the entire county, takes care of animal control for the city for $17,000 a year.

Franklin County Animal Control Supervisor Thad Snell spoke at Monday’s meeting and reminded residents about the leash law.

Snell says Animal Control will only pick up animals weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents must call Benton Police after 3 p.m. for help. Snell says Animal Control is on call 24-7 in case of an emergency.

Residents will be ticketed if their animal is found running around and not on a leash. Snell says the leash law is not just for dogs, but for any domesticated animal in the city.

There are three things officers will go out on if called according to Snell.

Snell also mentioned that Animal Control will not pick up any wildlife.
