Ryan Thorpe is no longer Zeigler City Treasurer.

The Zeigler City Council met last night and voted unanimously to let Thorpe go after he allegedly stole more than $225,000 from the city over the last two-and-a-half years. Thorpe was not at last night’s meeting.

According to WSIL-TV, an audit of city finances showed that Thorpe wrote several hundred checks to himself and then altered copies of those checks in city records to show names of approved vendors.

The FBI last month raided Thorpe’s home and his office at City Hall. The FBI’s investigation into this matter continues.

City leaders say they are working with the city’s insurance company to get the lost money back. They say there should be at least partial payment of the insurance claim in the coming week.
