(CARLYLE, IL) — A 62-year-old Centralia High School teacher is free on $1,000 bond after he was arrested early Monday morning on multiple drug related charges. James E. White was initially arrested by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office and booked around 3:30 Monday morning on two counts possession of a controlled substance and manufacture with the intent to deliver between 10-30 grams of cannabis. White was formally charged later Monday with Class 4 felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of between 10-30 grams of cannabis. His bail was set at $10,000 and he was released from the Clinton County Jail after posting $1,000 cash bond. Illinois statute does not classify cannabis as a controlled substance. White’s request in court Monday for the appointment of a public defender was denied. He is next scheduled to appear in court July 24 for a status hearing. CHS Superintendent Chuck Lane confirms that White teaches Social Science at the school and has been employed by CHS for 30 years.
