CENTRALIA — A 28-year-old Jefferson County Man faces drug and assault charges after a Sunday Arrest.

Centralia Police reports indicate that John Kaufman of East Seven Oaks Drive in Boyd is currently in the Marion County Jail for possession of a controlled substance, aggravated assault and possession of drug paraphernalia. He had allegedly been making threats while armed with a machete.

CPD received a call at 3:49 a.m. Sunday morning to a South Sycamore Street residence after Kaufman had allegedly threatened to have people shoot up the apartment. The man was reportedly walking nearby when police arrived.

Resident Dawn Ferguson had reportedly lent Kaufman a small sum of money, but when Kaufman returned he didn’t have money but instead offered Ferguson the machete and later methamphetamine to serve as payment. Upon being declined, Kaufman allegedly began to threaten Ferguson.

CPD discovered the machete and small amount of methamphetamine in a container and later searched Kaufman’s backpack that was left at the residence where they discovered a syringe containing meth residue.
