(SALEM, IL) — Bond has been reduced for an 18-year-old Salem man charged in Marion County Court with attempted murder for the alleged shooting of two men at a party in Salem last month. Tyler Caswell is accused of shooting 20-year-old Jacob Hayes and 21-year-old Jacob Joyner, both of Salem. Bond for Caswell was initially set at $750,000. But at a court hearing Wednesday Judge Marc Kelly reduced that amount to $500,000, after defense attorney Matt Wilzbach argued that one of the shootings may have been justified and the other accidental. Salem police detective Bryan Green testified at Wednesday preliminary hearing that Hayes brought two handguns to the party on Markland Street, and allegedly pointed one of the guns at Caswell who subsequently took the gun from him. Hayes then reportedly placed the second gun in his waistband, but as an argument ensued between Hayes and another individual Hayes allegedly reached for the gun in his waistband, with Caswell pushing the other person out of the way and shot Hayes in the chest with the gun he’d just taken from him. Green says Joyner and the person Caswell had pushed out of the way began grabbing for the gun in Caswell’s hand and in the struggle the trigger was again pulled and Joyner was struck. The bullet reportedly went through his hand and into his collarbone. As the bullet traveled it reportedly damaged Joyner’s spleen, and pancreas before stopping in his kidney. Caswell then fled the house, but ultimately turned himself in at the Salem Police Department. He is charged with four Class X felonies — two for attempted murder and two for aggravated battery by discharging a firearm — two Class 1 felonies for aggravated discharge of a firearm, and three Class 4 felonies – two for reckless discharge of a firearm and one for obstructing justice. Because State’s Attorney Bill Milner knows many of the young people from the party who may be called as witnesses, he withdrew from the case which has not been handed over to a special prosecutor. The case is next due in court February 22 for a pre-trial hearing. Caswell has pleaded not guilty and has demanded a jury trial.
