(MT. VERNON, IL) — Authorities with the Mt. Vernon Police Department responded Sunday to a report of an automobile/pedestrian accident. According to the accident report, at approximately 5:06 p.m. Sunday, an automobile driven by a 15 year old female resident of Mt. Vernon was travelling southbound on 12th Street just south of the intersection of 12th Street and Lamar. Another vehicle had stopped in the northbound lane to unload a passenger. The passenger of the stopped vehicle, later identified as 16 year old Lanzale M. Wilson of Mt. Vernon, had exited the vehicle and went around the back of that vehicle to cross the street. The driver of the southbound vehicle indicated that she saw Wilson and slowed down and Wilson had indicated he, too, saw the vehicle slow down. The driver indicated that she assumed Wilson would wait for her vehicle to pass, while Wilson indicated that he believed the vehicle was slowing to stop for him to cross the path. The vehicle accelerated and Wilson walked into the side of the vehicle. There were conflicting reports of the driver stopping and checking on Wilson after the incident with the driver and her passenger indicating that Wilson had indicated he was fine and the driver continued on, and Wilson and other eyewitnesses indicating that the driver never stopped after the incident. Wilson was transported to the hospital by ambulance for non-life threatening injuries. The driver was cited for failure to give information and render aid.
