(MT. VERNON, IL) — A 54 year old Mt. Vernon woman was arrested Monday for possession of Schedule IV controlled substances and retail theft.  Authorities were called to the Mt. Vernon Kohl’s Store of a report of a woman opening items and obscuring them on her person.  Authorities arrested Brenda Smith for misdemeanor retail theft less than $300, but added three felony possession of schedule IV controlled substances charges after a search of Smith yielded three different prescription medications that were not prescribed to Smith.  Smith was transported to the Jefferson County Justice Center where she was held awaiting her court appearance and the setting of bond.
