(EAST ST. LOUIS, IL) — A historic church in East St. Louis was destroyed by fire over the weekend.  Authorities have not determined the cause of the fire in the Christ Redeemed Missionary Baptist Church, which had stood for more than 120 years.  Firefighters were called to the scene around 7 p.m. Saturday and battled the blaze for almost five hours before it was under control. The church was built in 1894 and was St. Elizabeth Catholic Church until 1978, when it became Christ Redeemed.  Fire departments form St. Louis, Washington Park and Fairmont City helped battle the blaze.
