(SALEM, IL) — Bail for an 18-year-old Salem man has been set at $750,000 in connection with the shootings of two men Friday night at a party in the 700 block of Markland in Salem. Tyler Caswell has been charged with four Class X felonies, two counts aggravated battery with a firearm — one for each victim — and two counts first-degree attempted murder for allegedly shooting 21-year-old Jacob Joyner, and 20-year-old Jacob Hayes. According to Marion County State’s Attorney Bill Milner, Hayes and Joyner, both of Salem, were airlifted Friday night to a St. Louis area hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds suffered during a party. Their conditions have not been released. According to Salem police, they were called around 10:37 p.m. Friday to the 700 block of Markland for a report of shots fired. Salem police were assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Odin and Kinmundy police departments and the Illinois State Police. Details about what led up to the shooting are still unknown. There was reportedly a large gathering of young people at the Markland Street home for a birthday party. Several witnesses were taken in for questioning following the shooting by both Salem police and Marion County Sheriff’s deputies. Numerous people at the party fled the scene following the gunshots. Caswell has hired former state’s attorney Matt Wilzbach to represent him.
