(BENTON, IL) — A Dowell man was involved in a stand-off with Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies Christmas Eve night. According to Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones, deputies responded to a report around 10:45 p.m. from the Union Pacific Railroad that someone may have been struck by a train about halfway between West Frankfort and Benton just east of Illinois 37. Deputies found 37-year-old Curtis W. Camplin walking along the tracks armed with a knife and threatened to harm himself. The incident became a stand-off with deputies eventually gaining compliance from Camplin. He discarded his knife and surrendered. Camplin was initially taken to a local hospital for treatment of a self inflicted wound to his neck. After being medically cleared, Camplin was arrested for aggravated assault and on an outstanding Kentucky warrant for a felony probation violation.
