(NASHVILLE, IL) — A 31-year-old Caseyville man was sentenced Tuesday in Washington County court to 6-years in prison, after he pleaded guilty to one of four felony theft-related charges against him. Steven J. Herling was originally charged with Class 1 felony unlawful possession of more than 3 stolen vehicles or vehicle parts, and three counts Class 3 felony theft between $500 and $10,000. Herling pleaded guilty Tuesday to the Class 1 felony in exchange for the Class 3 charges being dismissed. In addition to the 6-year prison term, he must pay $1,557 in fines and fees. The matter of restitution will be addressed at a later date. Herling has been held in the Madison County jail since he and his brother Joseph Herling were arrested in August on three felony charges of burglary.  Steven Herling will receive credit for time served since that arrest. According to the Madison County Sheriff’s office, the two men had been targeting ATV-type vehicles, lawn equipment and chainsaws.
