(WALTONVILLE, IL) — A car vs. train collision around 3:15 Tuesday afternoon in Waltonville resulted in an area man being airlifted in critical condition from the scene of the crash. Waltonville Fire Protection District and Mt. Vernon City Fire arrived minutes later to the rail crossing at Stagecoach Road in Waltonville. Witnesses told Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies at the scene that the man was traveling westbound on Stagecoach Road when a train traveling more than 35 miles per hour struck the side of his vehicle. Emergency responders had to extricate the man from the vehicle that was totaled in the collision. EMTs were working to stabilize the man for air transport when the medical helicopter arrived on scene around 4 p.m. Stagecoach Road just east of Hall Lane in Waltonville was closed while first responders work the scene of the crash.
