(SALEM, IL) — A 41-year-old Madison man is in the Marion County Jail, after a traffic stop Sunday led to his arrest by Centralia police. Robert L. Hefner was formally charged this morning with Class 2 felony possession of a firearm by a felon with a prior conviction, Class 3 felony possession of less than 5-grams of methamphetamine, and misdemeanor driving while license revoked. Hefner was also issued traffic citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper use of registration or a title and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. He was stopped after he was reportedly driving the wrong way on Poplar Street. Officers say that during the stop they saw Hefner reach under his seat, and when questioned about it he reportedly admitted having ICE. A search of the vehicle reportedly revealed a rifle and a shotgun in a duffle bag in the back seat, and two handguns, one loaded and one unloaded in the trunk. Three boxes of ammunition were also reportedly found in the trunk and a baggie of cannabis was also reportedly found in the search. Hefner was taken in custody, with bail set at $40,000.
