(Herrin, IL) — A new monument that remembers the victims of the Herrin Massacre has been erected. Seventeen men were buried at the Herrin City Cemetery after being killed by a mob during a union strike at the Southern Illinois Coal Mine almost 93 years ago. A group of unmarked graves was discovered two years ago.
