(Shiloh, IL) — The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals [[ PETA ]] says it will honor a woman who was struck and killed while trying to save an opossum on a MetroLink track earlier this spring. Sandie Konopelski was described as a dedicated animal rescue volunteer. She was struck on the tracks near North Illinois Street just before 8:30 a.m. in late April. She worked for the Bi-State Wildlife Hotline. PETA will honor Konopelski by giving her a commemorative leaf on PETA’s “Tree of Life” memorial at its headquarters.
