(MARION, IL) — A Marion police officer who was sworn in this week as a new city councilman there is going on paid administrative leave until the legal process over whether he can remain a police officer plays out in court. WSIL-TV reports city attorney Steven Green file a case against Sgt. Angelo Hightower in Williamson County Court Tuesday asking a judge to rule that Hightower is not allowed to sit on the city council and keep his job as a police officer. Green cited a court case dating back to the early 1980s where an appellate court ruled that a Tinley Park village trustee could not serve as a village police officer at the same time. Hightower has asked Mayor Pro-Temp Anthony Rinella to put the offer in writing, which Rinella says he plans to do. Hightower was schedule to work again today, which would have been his next scheduled shift following him taking office Monday.
