(MT. VERNON, IL) — At Tuesday night’s Mt. Vernon City Council meeting, the council approved a request to seek permission for bids on a demolition project. This project lists six structures to be demolished and is the final round of demolition projects for the year. The addresses for the structures include: 300 N. 16th Street, 1011 Lamar Ave. (Garage Only), 1300 Jones Ave., 1212 S. 15th St. 801 S. 20th St., and 805 20th St. Also, The Mt. Vernon Police Department awarded two awards to officers at the meeting. The officers were chosen by a group of high-ranking department personnel. The first award was the Life-Saving Award, and was awarded to Officer Matthew Hoelscher and Assistant Chief Trent Page. On February 19, 2014, Page and Hoelscher responded to a 911 call at 201 Potomac Ave. and discovered a man not breathing and had no pulse. Officers began chest compressions and emergency resuscitation until the paramedics could stabilize the patient. The last award was the 2014 Officer of the Year award and was given to Corporal Travis Chapman.
