(CARMI, IL) — Alcohol played a factor in a one-vehicle crash in White County Saturday. Illinois State Police say shortly after 6:30 p.m., 57-year-old Stephen C. Niehaus of Carmi was driving his truck north on County Road 1375 East approaching the intersection with County Road 800 North. He failed to slow down to negotiate the intersection causing his truck to leave the roadway to the north. The truck ended up in the ditch and then it struck the ditch embankment. Niehaus was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries he received in the crash. His passenger, 57-year-old Shelly L. Burnett of Carmi, refused treatment at the scene. Niehaus was cited for DUI, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and failure to wear seat belt. Burnett was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to wear seat belts and possession of cannabis less than 2.5 grams.
