MT. VERNON — A three-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 57 near the I-64 split north of Mt. Vernon claimed the life of an Opdyke woman.

Initially, it was reported that the driver of the pickup truck, Edward F. Troutt, 94, of Opdyke was the deceased victim of the crash. However, we have now received word that Troutt’s wife, 86-year-old Helen F. Troutt, was a passenger and killed in the wreck.

Edward Troutt was traveling north on I-57 when he reportedly lost control and crossed the median into the path of a southbound semi driven by 53-year-old Randal Barkley of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

The truck then continued north into the southbound lanes, striking a car driven by 56-year-old David Laws of Carlyle. The pickup and the car driven by Laws both came to rest in the median.

The crash occurred at 9:19 Wednesday morning and caused Interstate 57 south of Dix and Interstate 64 east at Woodlawn to be closed for several hours.

Edward was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
